Rachel Faulkner's mirror Chippendale furniture school

Reflections

It’s the end of our annual gilding fortnight and our professional course students have made some wonderful stuff.

Rachel Faulkner from Newcastle has once again shown herself to have very real artistic talent.

She’s well into carving a pair of intertwined hands for her course mirror – a piece that all our students have to make.

She’s also made a sycamore and elm bench, with three images of her dog Skipper incorporated onto it.

She used stained wood filler as a base, then painted with water colours and etched using a pyrography pen.

Her mirror of a naked woman is also a work of art, once more showing her artistic talent to good effect.

It was gilded onto the mirror using a combination of red, yellow and white gold.

Campbell Paterson

We earlier published a photograph of Campbell Paterson’s stunning mirror, although only the glass.

Now that whole mirror is in one piece, we can show you a picture of the finished article.

The mirror is gilded with 12 carat white gold and 24 carat yellow gold, with deft brush strokes and cotton dabs to give it an antique look.

The frame in fumed oak has been meticulously carved, and gilded with 24 carat gold and copper.

The copper element is also to make the frame look old, to complement the antique appearance of the mirror.

The pattern of the frame echoes that of the sun’s rays or of a sunflower in full bloom.

Like Rachel’s mirror, it’s more a work of art than a functional mirror.
