“Having spent nearly 30 years as a soldier, designing and making furniture offered some new and exciting challenges. Simply — many thanks. My transfer to civilian life from the Army is complete; it’s been emotional.”

Lieutenant Colonel Guy Harnby

Looking for a new career in furniture design & restoration?

Every year we welcome some armed forces leavers onto our 9 month furniture making course at the Chippendale International School of Furniture.

Founded in 1985, the school is the UK’s leading furniture design, making and restoration school. It is located in inspiring, rolling countryside near Edinburgh.

If you are leaving the armed forces and want to build a new career in furniture design and making or professional woodworking, our course is very hands-on and practical; it also teaches business skills and is particularly geared towards setting up your own furniture making business.

Some students stay on after graduation, basing themselves in our Chippendale Incubator Workshops. This helps get their new furniture business off the ground on low rents while they continue to benefit from our facilities and support.
