“It was an adventurous experience for me. It gave me courage and new world. I am blessed a lot with good mates, good tutors, fine machinery and best environment!”

Michiko Kakiuchi, Japan

The Chippendale International School of Furniture in Scotland has welcomed many furniture students from Japan.

Founded in 1985 and based near Edinburgh in Scotland, the Chippendale School is the UK’s leading furniture school. The Chippendale School welcomes 24 students onto each furniture course, ensuring excellent 1:1 tuition within a buzzing woodworking community.

Thomas Chippendale was the world’s leading cabinet maker in his day and his legacy lives on. At the Chippendale School, we aim to pass on his genius within a modern context.

You learn to master over 80 woodworking techniques on our intensive 9 month furniture courses, covering furniture design, furniture making, furniture restoration and cabinet making.

Students learn the same skills here in 9 months as on many 3 year courses, saving you time and lost earnings. It’s hard work but you’ll have a lot of fun too!

Our students tell us that they really like our furniture school because we provide:

  • A time-saving, intensive furniture design, making and restoration course
  • Lots of workshop space
  • A collaborative woodworking community
  • A fun, life-changing experience
  • A real-world woodworking environment
  • An inspiring, creative, ‘think different’ environment
  • A strong business and career focus
  • A stunning location in Scotland, Europe’s most beautiful country
  • Genuine value for money

1400 hours of hands-on furniture making

The Chippendale School’s unique approach is practical and hands-on with 1400 hours of bench time focused on making your own pieces of furniture. We also provide lectures, courses by visiting experts and inspiring trips to famous furniture collections.

Each student has two work benches and all our students work together in one big workshop. Students design and make at least three original pieces during the furniture course.

Furniture Restoration

Only through the study of antique furniture can students learn the wide range of existing techniques. That’s why our students have up to three pieces of antique furniture to restore during the course.

We welcome novices and those with some woodworking experience, entrepreneurs, career changers and hobbyists. All you need is to love working with wood!
