“I really enjoyed my time at Chippendale and it tought me a lot on furniture and got me into this field. I have now been in the furniture business for nearly 8 years. I thoroughly enjoyed working with allan and graham and everyone else at the workshop.”

The Chippendale International School of Furniture welcomes students from India.

Based near Edinburgh in Scotland, the Chippendale School is the UK’s leading furniture design school. Since 1985 we have been specializing in teaching the design, making and restoration of high quality furniture.

We welcome students from India with little or no woodworking experience as well as more experienced woodworkers. All you need is a love of working with wood!

Each of the 24 students on our intensive 9 month woodworking course (from October to early June) is assigned to a small tutorial group with a dedicated tutor. They also attend classes taught by some of the most recognized professional woodworking craftsmen in the UK.

One of the key things that make our school different from other furniture schools is the interaction and collaboration between 22 students from different countries working together. Our furniture course ensures that students learn from each other, share ideas and solve problems together.

You also learn the same skills here in 9 months as on many 3 year courses, saving you time and significant lost earnings. It’s hard work but you’ll have a lot of fun too!

Our furniture courses are designed to give you the knowledge and skills to become a professional woodworker. Most of our students go on to start up their own furniture design or woodworking business, with some setting up in the adjoining Chippendale Incubator Workshops.

1400 hours of hands-on furniture making

We believe that you can only learn to make furniture with practice. Each student has two workbenches and all our students work together in one big workshop. Theory classes are limited to one hour a day and each student is expected to design and make at least three original pieces during the furniture course.

English language and student visas

As far as English speaking is concerned, a CEFR level B1 score is adequate.  The school can recommend experienced language tutors for one to one tuition or group work.  We find that living and working here is a great way to improve language skills.

As an international furniture school it should be easy for you to obtain your Student Visa as we have Highly Trusted Sponsor status with the UK Borders Agency (the Chippendale School is on the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors).
