Professor David Jones – Furniture Historian

Professor David Jones of St Andrews University, is one of Scotland’s leading furniture historians. He gives a keynote lecture on the life and times of Thomas Chippendale.

Charlie Oldham – Master Carver – Wood carving

Charlie Oldham leads the session on woodcarving. He qualified as a Master Carver in 1988, having trained in top London workshops where he worked on some of the finest pieces of 18th century gilt wood furniture.

He has worked on the restoration of Hampton Court, Spencer House and Windsor Castle.
He runs his own carving workshop in Somerset.

Fiona Crombie – Stained Glass Artist

Fiona Crombie tutors the students in stained glass.  In 1985, Fiona learned the technique of lamp-worked glass from Ed Iglehart, who was senior lecturer in glass at Sunderland Polytechnic. Fiona was then invited to join British Artists in Glass, leading her to develop her skills in stained glass and, more recently, fused glass.  Fiona’s pieces vary widely, from small decorative objects to large bespoke windows.

In addition to teaching, Fiona also owns and runs The Seashore Gallery at Cockenzie harbour, along the coast to the east of Edinburgh.

Tom Thackray – Windsor Chair Maker

Tom Thackray presents the five day course where students learn how to make a classic Windsor Chair.

Tom, who is based in Yorkshire, has over 40 years experience in the tradition of the making of Windsor Chairs.

Simon Macintyre – Furniture Restoration Expert

Simon Macintyre is a specialist tutor in furniture restoration. He has his own successful furniture restoration business in Sussex.

Richard Walker – Gilding

Richard Walker, who holds a 1st Class Degree from the University of Portsmouth in Restoration and Decorative Studies, is our gilding tutor.  He is a member of the Society of Gilders and works as a gilding consultant and practitioner, specialising in teaching traditional gilding and restoration on both sides of the Atlantic and at his studio, also in Portsmouth.

Richard is currently producing a book that teaches all aspects of gilding . . .  so watch this space!


Wood Turning

Anselm Fraser, the School’s senior tutor, teaches the art of wood turning.

Alec Glass – Upholstery

Alec Glass demonstrates the skills of upholstery in the first term. He has ran a successful business in Musselburgh, outside Edinburgh for 25 years, and learned his skills from his father.

He works on contemporary pieces as well as commissions for museums and private collections.
