School announces details of new intermediate course

The Chippendale school has announced details of its new one-month intermediate course.

The month-long intermediate course will primarily be taught by staff member Alan McGovern who has 33 years of woodworking experience.

Alan is pictured (above right) with, Eion Gibbs, our first student on the course.  You can read more about Eion here.

The intermediate course fills an identified gap between our one-week introductory course and our nine-month professional course.

The intermediate course will only have two students at any one time to maximise the amount of one-to-one tuition, and there will be no formal start and end dates, to better ensure that tuition can be fitted around students’ other commitments.

The course will not only teach practical skills, but give students a bench work project to design and build a solid-wood table.

It is aimed at the enthusiastic hobbyist who wants to take their woodworking skills to a whole new level.  For example, our second student, Fiona Gilfillan, wanted to learn more about furniture restoration.

It’s not intended as a pathway into professional woodworking, but will give students the skills and confidence to flourish in their woodworking hobby.

Students will learn basic skills, including how to hand plane wood, jointing techniques, mortise and tenon joints and dovetail  joints.

The course begins with instruction on how to safely use hand tools and the wide range of heavy machinery available at the Chippendale school.

The course project will be to design and build a hardwood table with a size restriction of 1500mm long x 500mm deep x 800mm high.  As with all furniture made on our courses, students are expected to take the table home at the end of the course.

As we will only take a maximum of two intermediate students at any one time, it is advisable to book your place well in advance.

Further details, including an online application form, are now available here on the Chippendale school’s website.
