Coffee table roars in for new furniture designer

It’s a coffee table that thinks it’s a motorbike, and it’s the creation of a new Falkirk furniture designer.

Ronnie Payne, a former RAF technician and police officer, has set up Ripplewood Furniture to design and make new furniture and carry out restoration projects.

His Revv-It table was the centrepiece of his graduation portfolio from the Chippendale International School of Furniture in East Lothian.

A Harley Davidson enthusiast, Ronnie wanted to make something quirky and unique, but which is also sturdy and absolutely functional.

The married father of three daughters saw RAF service in the UK, Germany, Falkland Islands and twice in the Middle East, and is a 21-year veteran of the police service in Glasgow and South Lanarkshire.

Ronnie inherited his love of woodwork from his father who was a joiner and, after leaving Police Scotland, enrolled at the Chippendale school, Scotland’s only furniture design school, and graduated last week.

His new central belt business, Ripplewood Furniture, aims to create functional and bespoke furniture, as well as hand-crafted kitchens or other woodwork projects.

Ronnie’s love of motorbikes dates back to his teens, and he now drives a Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe, and is an enthusiastic member of the Harley Owners Group.

His Revv-It table, complete with wooden saddle, petrol tank and handlebars, shows how innovative design and craftsmanship can add something unique to a home – and a piece of furniture that will also become an heirloom.

“I have always loved wood ever since my father taught me how to use tools as a child,” said Ronnie.

“I have now been able to realise my dream and make wonderful creations from locally sourced wood here in the central belt of Scotland,” he said.
